What Are Social Skills and Why Are They Important?

Strong social skills are critical to successful functioning in the home, school and community environment in a child’s life. Knowing what to say while also knowing how to say it is made possible by social skills.  When learning social skills, children learn how to make decisions, how to adapt in a variety of social situations, and how to build enduring friendships and connections.  Social skills are the building blocks of communication.

While most kids pick up the appropriate social skills from their everyday encounters, some kids may not, and they struggle picking them up through modeling in routine activities.

Our social skills groups are led by licensed pediatric speech therapists and are specifically designed to help kids in organizing and mastering social skills in a way supported by visual examples (such as social stories, personal stories), along with therapy activities supported by modeling and materials that enable structured teaching making it simpler for kids to master the art of appropriate social skills.

How Do Our Speech Therapists Teach Social Skills?

Depending on each child's specific needs, our skilled speech therapists work with them in small groups to teach the skills required to effectively communicate in social situations and environments.

We use a variety of strategies, including fun games and video modeling, to make it more engaging for kids to learn social skills.  Goals often focus on developing better interpersonal skills (such as sharing, joint attention, joining an activity, taking turns), problem solving (such as asking for help or decision-making), and conflict resolution (such as peer pressure, compromising with peers).

Our groups are designed so that each child benefits from interaction with other peers in the group.  Call us today as we would look forward to having your child included in one of our Social Skills groups at our Plymouth Meeting or Feasterville locations!

Here at My Child’s Therapy we have a very skilled and diverse team of therapists.
